One box, two products: Lõuna Pagarid and Kroonpak create a smart packaging solution
Anyone who works with packaging knows that a package must do several things at once. It must protect the product, fit the setting – whether that is a counter display, takeaway, or something else – be easy to use, match the value of the product, and support the brand’s look and feel.
The recent collaboration between Lõuna Pagarid and Kroonpak is a good example of how all these aspects can come together in one packaging development project.
One box instead of several – with two ways to use it
The project started when Lõuna Pagarid had developed a new product, mini muffins, and needed suitable packaging for them. Since the company had already worked with Kroonpak for several years on boxes, bags, and labels, it was natural to develop the new solution together.
Lõuna Pagarid has a wide product range, and it soon became clear that cookies would also need a box. At first, the plan was to create two separate boxes. Kroonpak’s packaging designer, Meeri Krass, tested several shapes and insert options until the joint development process led to a new idea: one box that could be used for both products. The idea suited both Kroonpak and Lõuna Pagarid well, as it meant fewer packaging types and a simpler ordering and packing process.

Functional, practical, and presentable
Once the “one box, two products” idea was in place, the next step was to find the right solution for the inside of the box. The muffins needed compartments that would keep them in place during transport and throughout the product’s shelf life. For the cookies, the main challenge was preventing leakage, which was initially planned to be solved with a double bottom. During development, the team arrived at a particularly clever solution: a two-sided insert, with one side designed for mini muffins and the other for cookies.
The result is highly practical, while also presenting the product in a better way. For both bakery products, it was important that the packaging should feel slightly more festive and be suitable for gifting. This is especially relevant for the cookies, where the raised base brings them forward visually and highlights the value of the product.

The right prototype makes decisions easier
For Lõuna Pagarid, one of the most important parts of the process was that product development became much easier, more professional, and more convenient than before. Kroonpak’s packaging designer was involved from the start, offering advice and practical support, and preparing several prototypes for evaluation along the way.
Previous packaging development projects had been much more complicated and hands-on: measuring, cutting, gluing, waiting for feedback from the supplier, making corrections, and then repeating the process. This time, the team could hold the correctly shaped box in their hands right away and test the products inside it.
With the right prototype, decisions are much easier to make: you can assess the size, feel the material, test the packing process, and see how the box works in a real sales environment. On a table, every package can look good. Its real performance becomes clear only in use.
The material choice did not require a long search in this project, as the solution proposed by Kroonpak suited the client straight away. The packaging is made from MM Board & Paper’s ALASKA® BARRIER GREASE board, which is well suited for chilled, frozen, and dry foods, as well as food service applications. For muffins and cookies, its key advantage is resistance to grease and moisture, helping the package keep its shape and protecting it from grease stains and discolouration. The muffins and cookies have a counter display time of 12 to 15 days, and the package performs well throughout that period.
The material also offers excellent printability and converting performance, which helps Kroonpak maintain a high standard in production. Good printability allows Lõuna Pagarid’s warm, playful, and finely detailed pattern to come through clearly, giving the package a polished and appealing overall look.

A major advantage: ease of use
Ease of packing was another important part of the final solution. Kroonpak’s packaging designer proposed a structure where the lid and base form one complete unit, so the box does not need to be assembled, fixed, or folded separately before the products are placed inside. The box reaches the client pre-folded, can be opened immediately, and is ready for use. This saves time and makes the packing of bakery products smoother.
The collaboration between Lõuna Pagarid and Kroonpak shows how much well-considered packaging development can add, even when the initial task seems straightforward. The goal was to find packaging for two products. The result was a smart solution that reduces costs, simplifies work, and supports both the value of the product and a better customer experience.
